Austin

“Shit,” Austin said as he dropped his head back on the grass. He covered his face with his arm, letting out a long, ragged breath, wincing at the pain the action produced in his chest. “I don’t know how I’m ever going to get this right,” he mumbled.

He peeked at John from under his arm, not really waiting for an answer, but suspecting his long-ago friend was dying to say something. John lay next to him, feeling his face for the bruises that were slowly surfacing. His left eye was in the process of swelling. Austin felt a sense of satisfaction that he’d gotten him good. Fucker deserved it. How dare he kiss his girl?

“Look at us, all bruised up like a couple of high school hooligans, and she’s the one apologizing. Why?”

“Because she feels guilty—for everything. Charlie, you, me. I want...” Austin started but stopped himself. John was not the person he wanted to talk about Claire with.

“Want what?” John asked, his voice slow.

Austin stared at him, debating whether he should confide in him like he once had. He thought back to what he’d said about Claire pining for him. Now that he knew she let him go on purpose, he wondered if she had. But the thought of John’s filthy mouth on hers grated at his every nerve. She was his, and it was about time he showed her and every asshat who dare lay eyes on her who she belonged to, starting with the one next to him.

“I want to make things right with her. I want her back.”

“What the hell took you so long?”

“My pride was a little hurt, okay? The prettiest girl in school made me fall in love with her and then dumped my ass.”

“Not because she didn’t love you, man. We all knew that.”

“Yet you still went after her and put your filthy mouth on her.”

“Can you blame me? I’m sure you’ve noticed what she looks like now…” Austin’s fist came down hard on John’s chest, making him grunt loudly. “For fuck’s sake, man, ease off. I was just making an observation. And if this shiner is the consequence, it was worth it.” John moved before Austin could get at him again.

“Don’t ever try it again.”

“Let me ask you something,” John said, turning to look at him. “If you want to fix this up so bad, why in God’s name are you spilling your guts on the front lawn like a little a pussy? Go get your girl.”

He couldn’t help but laugh at that. Then he grunted. Damn, his body hurt. You’d think playing the guitar while running up and down a stage kept you in shape, but none of that exercise could prepare you for a John “Deere” Lowe beating. He went to get up, winced again, and quickly lay back down, holding on to his ribs as if they were going to fall out of him. He reached into his back pocket, hoping to God his cell phone wasn’t broken. He looked over at John, who was stretching his arms over his head.
